Mihachiro Kai (1903–1979) was a Japanese painter who deeply loved Japan's flora, fauna, natural landscapes, and folk crafts, leaving behind many works rendered in a warm and unpretentious style. During his time in Manchuria, he also developed a fondness for Manchurian culture and regional folk toys. Some of his works are held in the collection of the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art. He was also devoted to haiku, and left behind numerous haiga (haiku paintings). After returning from Manchuria, he spent much of his creative life in Fukuma-cho, Fukuoka Prefecture (now Fukutsu City), the hometown of his wife's family.
Kai had a close friendship with Yasunari Kawabata, the Nobel Prize-winning author. It is a historical fact that Kai designed the cover of a book in which Kawabata was deeply involved as editor and selector. A collaborative work between Kawabata and Kai also remains to this day.
From among the many works Mihachiro Kai left behind, we have carefully selected those best suited as shirt designs for our lineup. As there are a great number of works, we plan to continue adding new designs in the future.
